Tour Itinerary: Unlocking Mayo: The Erris Experience.

01

Blacksod Lighthouse

Enjoy a guided tour of Blacksod Lighthouse, first illuminated in 1866. The lighthouse is most famous for the weather report from keeper Maureen Sweeney in 1944, heralding inclement weather which caused the D Day landings at Normandy to be postponed by 1 day when conditions would be more favourable.

Historic lighthouse on a rocky shoreline with a person in red standing on the steps, surrounded by water and clouds in the background. Ideal for coastal scenery and maritime architecture enthusiasts.
02

St. Derbhla’s Well

This was a site of pagan pilgrimage long before it was incorporated as a site of Christian devotion. Deirbhile is said to have fled to this part of Fál mór to escape the affections of an unwanted suitor – she plucked out her eyes to demonstrate her aversion. It is said that bathing her eyes in the waters of the well caused them to be restored after his departure.

White chapel with a blue cross overlooking the sea and grassy landscape, featuring distant islands under a cloudy sky.
03

Teach John Joe

You will be treated to a light lunch as you are entertained by gifted local musicians who get the foot tapping and the heart pumping. We’re on west of Ireland time now so relax, kick back and enjoy the local hospitality

Two musicians perform in a cozy pub setting, one playing the violin and the other strumming a guitar, with two pints of dark beer on the table. The warm ambiance features leather seating and stained glass windows, creating an inviting atmosphere for live music.
04

The Solas Visitor Centre

The centre stands as a beacon of knowledge and discovery inviting visitors to explore the rich history and vibrant culture of the Gaeltacht region of Erris. You will be greeted with immersive exhibits spread across three galleries, each offering an interesting perspective on the heritage of the mullet peninsula.

Historic boat displayed in a museum, featuring an interactive exhibit with informational panels and a backdrop of historical figures, highlighting maritime heritage and cultural significance.
